From Newcomer to International Competitor in Under Five Years
By Brad Scott
Curling is a sport that welcomes new players and provides opportunities for dedicated athletes to progress to international competition in a relatively short time. One example is Curling WA’s Wayne Griffiths, who has been curling for less than five years, will compete at the 5-and-Under World Championships in Wisconsin, USA, from 12–14 December. Wayne, shown here on the left, will join a team composed of Australian curlers from different locations. Wayne's team members include Tristan Wills, Ashley Saunders and coach Bruce Freshwater, all from the Victorian Curling Association. Their fourth team member is Jessica Boersen, not shown, is from the Orlando Curling Club in Florida.
Curling WA Chair, David Moy, said Wayne’s pathway demonstrates how quickly athletes can grow in the sport. “Wayne has shown commitment and enthusiasm in every step of his development. We are pleased to see him gaining international experience and look forward to supporting him and the team as they compete in Wisconsin.”
